Want to learn 10 easy ways to improve your quarantine workout during the Coronavirus Pandemic? Laid out below are creative ways to improve your health during this global lockdown. Since this quarantine has people excessive eating, watching Netflix on the couch all day, and skipping that gym routine you were so accustomed to, learn how to work around this!

So what is everyone doing to stay in shape these days!?

I’m on day 16 (3/29/2020) of quarantine and luckily I have managed to lose weight during this time. I have been eating as healthy as I can, and I have been mindful of my physical activity levels each day.

Here are 10 easy ways to workout during quarantine that can get you your summer body.

1. Quarantine Weight training

The good old fashioned strength training routine.

Honestly, I don’t have free weights in my house, but I do have 8-12 pound medicine balls and an 8 pound kettelbell.

I make a point to use these every day even if it’s just for ten minutes at a time.

One of the things I always slack on at the gym is working on my abs, but with the medicine balls I have in the comfort and privacy of my own living room, I have been crushing my ab workouts.

What happens if you don’t have free weights though?

Literally find any household items to use. A few weeks ago I was watching my sisters 3 month old baby, and to get him to stop crying he just wanted to be held. Well this was cutting into my work out time, so I started doing lunges and squats with him. He loved it, and my legs loved it!

Got a jug of milk? Kettlebell workout.

Got canned goods? Dumbbells.

Got books on a shelf? Free weights.

Really the sky is the limit on what you can work out with in your house. You don’t have to get a crazy high intensity workout with household items, but you should be doing something to challenge your muscles.

2. Yoga On Lockdown

Of course I would have yoga as one of my top 10 ways to improve your workout during quarantine. If you check out a previous article I wrote about yoga, you will find out how beneficial it can be —> Benefits of Yoga HERE.

Yoga for me is my daily lifesaver, and depending on my mood I do poses that work for me in the moment.

For instance, if I wake up sore or my muscles are tight from a previous workout, I do poses specifically to give my body relief.

Other days, I want a whole body strength session. I like to find YouTube videos that show me new poses, and after a week or two of trying it out, I find other videos that challenge my body a little further.

During my quarantine I like to stick to the same morning routine. I wake up, shower, make coffee, check my social media, and as I feel the coffee kicking in I get on my floor and do my yoga. It’s usually done by 10 am, because I still have the rest of my day to get my walk in, or some of my weight training.

Yoga wakes my body up, and sets my day up for success.

3. Improve Your Walking/Running

Well, I am not a runner. I can run fast, but not far. But for others, you might enjoy a fresh air run vs a walk, and I give you credit.

Walking and running is simple when it comes to my 10 ways to improve quarantine workout, because no equipment is needed!

For me though, I like to get my walk in midday when it’s the warmest. Don’t forget I’m in Michigan, so our temps are just starting to hit 40-55 degrees during the week. I am not a fan of the cold, so midday works for me.

If you have pets at home, take them outside for some exercise! Not only do you get to benefit, but so do they! I saw a really funny meme that said “now that we are all quarantined, I finally understand why my dog wants to run out the front door every time I open it”, and that couldn’t be more true. We are finally understanding what they do all day…and it’s usually nothing.

But either way, whether you are a runner, or you just want to enjoy a nice walk…DO IT. Track your steps, miles, or whatever else you need to do. Currently I walk a mile every day, and next week I am setting a goal to walk two miles every day.

4. Improve Your Gym Workout At Home

My fiance gets up at 4:30 am every single day to go to the gym, but now with everything closed he had to figure out a new way to stay active.

He started going into our basement for his cardio days (normally he’d run a few miles on the treadmill at Planet Fitness), and getting a good solid 30-45 minute workout in just by doing body weight exercises.

For instance, he put a whole circuit together with jumping jacks, high knees, low knees, running in place, mountain climbers, and burpees (I call them squat thrusts). Instead of counting reps, he did each exercise for time, and repeated them two or three times in a circuit.

When it comes to his strength training routine that he no longer can do at the gym, he again does this in our basement. He ordered jump ropes, resistance bands, a few weights and a pull up bar from Amazon.

If you already have this stuff laying around you’re golden, but if you want more of that gym feel without having to use the canned goods, or milk cartons I talked about earlier, I would suggest ordering a few things you think you might like, and start there.

Just because we are on lock down, doesn’t mean we can’t get a good gym workout in!

5. Fitness Challenges Online

#5 in my top 10 ways to improve your quarantine workout may be one of my favorites.

These are HUGE right now. Every time you go on Instagram, you got another friend tagging you in their push up challenge stories or squat challenge stories. I teach PE, and I have an Instagram account for my students, and one of them tagged me in the #JumpOffYourPorchChallenge. I’m not going to lie I did it, and it was really fun. It actually got me outside and kept me there for a while!

But anyways, there are plenty of challenges going around on social media and if you haven’t been tagged yet in one, go seek out your own and start something new!

I created a 30 day total body fitness challenge that you can start with HERE if you would like, or you can find something more accommodating for your own needs online.

With my challenge, I liked to change it up every day, and each week increase the repetitions verses doing the same thing every day like a daily squat challenge. You have to give your muscles time to rebuild in between workouts.

But for some, just sticking to a routine is achievement in it’s own, and I wont take that away from you.

6. TiKTok For The Quarantine

Yes. TikTok.

I’m telling you it’s SO FUN. I haven’t personally posted any to my account yet, but I have been looking on the app for the last few days, trying to figure out what I want to learn and copy.

The point I’m making with TikTok is that there are viral dance challenges going around, and people all over the world are joining in to post a video of themselves performing some dance with their own flavor.

Again on my teacher Instagram, one of the first weeks we went to online teaching, I challenged all of my students to create a dance or post a video of them dancing and I would have to copy them. This got them AND me moving, but after some tags I quickly fell into the TikTok craze.

I started with the Hit Yo Groove dance, because it was the easiest for me and I had the best time learning and perfecting my moves! I’m no where near good, but while I was practicing I was getting are really good workout in.

Renegade is the next song I want to perfect, so I’ve been scrolling TikTok to see what everyone else is doing. And while I am on it, I save other videos I want to try.

My friend and I send each other TikTok dances we want to do together once we can come out of our houses, but for now we are going to practice them a few cities away from each other and get our dance on!

7. Workout Online

Since everyone is trying to stay healthy and safe, of course gyms and smaller fitness studies have closed. This is a big deal for so may. #7 in my top 10 ways to improve your quarantine workout will help the people who still need assistance working out.

The great thing about a lot of these places is that they are not leaving their clients or class members high and dry. They offer online training where they FaceTime or create some sort of web conference, where you both can work out together.

I know plenty of people who are still able to take their fitness classes right in their living room. They either hook their call up to their TV to see their trainer, or they just simply use their laptop or phone.

If you might be interested in this, check out some local places to see if there are any free trials so you can test it out. You might not be able to reach the business phone, but most gyms or fitness studios have a website or Facebook page that you can look up to see how they are running their business during the lock down.

8. HIIT

This is one of my favorites, and will probably be your best bet for getting into shape fast.

HIIT stands for high intensity interval training, and its purpose is to burn a lot of fat in a short amount of time. The great thing about this way of training is that even when you’re done you are still burning calories at a much faster rate than other workouts.

For more information and a beginners workout that I personally enjoy, check out this article all about HIIT and what it can do for you HERE.

Not only does this workout do so much good for your body, but it’s done in a short amount of time, in a limited space, with usually no equipment.

I can’t think of a better quarantined workout right there. Living room floor, tennis shoes, and a whole lot of sweat.

9. Organize and Improve Your House

This is something I personally did in the first week of my quarantine and boy did I feel accomplished.

I started with my spare bedroom that doubles as my closet. I filled 3 garbage bags worth of clothes I wanted to donate, and then organized all of my clothes, and deep cleaned the whole room from top to bottom.

It took me a couple hours, but in that time frame I was up and down and back and forth though out my house. My body was constantly in motion and I felt really accomplished afterwards.

Not only did I have a clean disinfected organized room, but someone in need was able to come pick up my donation from my porch. It was a win win for me.

My next daily task was to rearrange my kitchen. I’m huge on cooking and since I moved into my house 8 months ago, I have never had the perfect kitchen set up. Everything has a place, but it isn’t up to my standards.

So I spent another couple hours moving, cleaning, rearranging and making sure my kitchen was perfect and spotless from top to bottom.

Pick a room that you want to overhaul, and just wake up in the morning and get it done. The feeling of success you get when you are finished prompts you to keep going.

10. Make Up Your Own Games

Lastly, in my top 10 ways to improve your quarantine workout we are going to get creative!

Again for the millionth time in all of my posts I tell everyone I’m a PE teacher. Well I still have to work even though Michigan schools are closed.

Many people wonder what PE teachers are even doing these days since the stereotype of a PE teacher is to just roll out the balls and let the kids play. So obvously they can’t be doing anything on this time off right?

Wrong. I have my Instagram set up for my students and post challenges, workouts, or goals I am working on to inspire them to tell me what they are working on as well. But one of my latest posts to them is to show them different activities they can do in their house to keep active.

The first activity I posted to them was called “Coffee Table Tennis”. I made paddles out of paper plates and kitchen spoons, and then cut a piece of Styrofoam to use as the “ball” (we didn’t have balloons which would have been ideal).

Then I just showed them how much fun it could be and tried to inspire them to recreate this game using their own household items.

One of my goals this quarantine is to come up with three different household games a week. I’ve already done the table tennis game, and I would love to show them other fun ways to keep moving.

For you at home, this could be a great bonding experience with your kids, or whoever you are living with. Even if you live alone, you could always create one player games!

The sky is your limit when it comes to creativity. Get up and start creating games!
