Health related fitness components are important for kids to learn at an early age. Understanding why exercise is important in elementary grades will help you live a healthier life as an adult. If you can see the importance of movement, your more likely to be a lifelong mover!

Over the years, I found that I stress the 5 health related fitness components more and more with my students. And especially virtually. It is so easy to take any of the components and turn it into a virtual lesson. With all the access us PE teachers have to free resources on YouTube, you can get your students up and moving without any equipment making your lives so much easier!

That’s also where I come in to help.

If you’ve been following my blog you will have noticed I have been creating PE realted content to share with the PE world on my YouTube channel.

So far I have created cross curricular warm up videos for elementary:

And virtual I Spy Active Scavenger Hunts for grades K-6

But I wanted to step my virtual I Spy Active Scavenger Hunts by aligning them with the SHAPE Grade Level Outcomes.

Let’s play games in PE with a purpose!

SHAPE Standards and Grade Level Outcomes for Health Related Fitness

Below are the grade level outcomes for standard 3’s fitness knowledge. Even though grades 2 and 3 don’t technically mention “health related fitness components” it doesn’t mean you can’t introduce the concepts to them.

Second Grade:

  • S3.E3.2a: Recognizes the use of the body as resistance (e.g., holds body in plank position, animal walks) for developing strength.
  • S3.E3.2b: Identifies physical activities that contribute to fitness.

Third Grade:

  • S3.E3.3: Describes the concept of fitness and provides examples of physical activity to enhance fitness

Fourth Grade:

  • S3.E3.4: Identifies the components of health-related fitness

Fifth Grade:

  • S3.E3.5: Differentiates between skill-related and health related fitness. (Skill I Spy games coming soon).

Middle School and the Health Related Fitness Components

SHAPE grade level outcomes in grades 6-8 are more review than anything of the health related components. Usually by these grades, students have moved onto practicing the skill related fitness components. But it doesn’t mean my virtual I Spy Active Scavenger Hunt games can’t be played.

Some middle schoolers may be too mature for a virtual scavenger hunt, BUT others may love it! Take a look at the games anyway and decide if they are right for your students.

Below are the grade level outcomes for middle school when it comes to the health related fitness components:

Sixth Grade:

  • S3.M7.6: Identifies the components of skill-related fitness.

Seventh Grade:

  • S3.M7.7: Distinguishes between health-related and skill-related fitness.

Eighth Grade:

  • S3.M7.8: Compares and contrasts health-related fitness components.

Virtual I Spy Active Scavenger Hunt: Health Related Fitness Component Edition

Out of the 5 health related fitness components (cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and body composition), I have created four I Spy games for you. Not included is a body composition component game.

Each game below lasts from 12:00-15:00 minutes. You may pause the games at any time to allow discussion and to check for understanding, or spend a couple minutes after each game to discuss what the students learned.
