Welcome back to the 20 days of summer school physical education series! If you are just joining this series, stop right now and check out Summer School Physical Education: Day 1. What Works and What Doesn’t.

The post above details what I will be talking about day to day, and how it can help you improve your social distancing physical education classes in the fall. It also lays out my class size, class time frames and space I am able to use.

If you are currently teaching summer school physical education, please leave comments on what works for you! I love collaborating, so let me know what you’re up to.

Yesterday

Yesterday was Tuesday, and we have gotten a lot more relaxed with what we are doing. Out of all the new games they have been learning, we are starting to play our favorites and fine tune them.

If you take a look at yesterdays summary, you will see we played our favorites, Monarchy, Capture the Flag, Nitroball and some outdoor free time.

So What did we do Today?

Morning Class:

Instead of starting with outdoor free time to wake up, we immediately jumped into two different games of Kickball.

We started with Matball, and after 4 innings, we switched to regular Kickball. I made their teams and split up the talent, creating a really intense couple games. I took a poll to see what game they liked better, and it was split right down the middle. Eight Matball and seven Kickball. It was nice getting a chance to play both of their favorites so everyone could have a great class.

Once we finished our kickball games, we took a ten minute break so everyone could relax and wash up. We then proceeded to do our outdoor time. I gave the students 30 minutes to soak up the sun, and get some unstructured time in.

For the last part of class, I took them to the weight room. Like I said in previous posts, there are kids who really enjoy working out in a gym. Even the students that don’t like the weight room as much as game play, still get to enjoy their music and some time to themselves. It also gives them an opportunity to improve on their fitness levels.

Afternoon Class:

We sort of flipped what we were doing in this class. Instead of starting with the Kickball games, we started in the weight room. Again, there are students that truly enjoy their time in there. Students were allowed to work on the weights, cardio equipment or indoor track.

Once the weight room time was finished, we headed right outside for 30 minutes. Unstructured physical activity for this class went smoothly just like the first class.

From here, we moved indoors where we finished the class out with the same two Kickball games as the morning class. If you remember the beginning of these summer school posts my afternoon class was so quiet and timid. But now they are loud, wild and competitive in the BEST ways. We had a Matball game with a score of 72-39. The intensity and effort they put into the game makes me love watching.

Overall

After today I will only be seeing each class two more times. I have a water balloon activity planned for Friday, so stay tuned to what it will look like.

Other than that, I’m just enjoying my time here. I’m not stressing on all of the standards. The majority of them are being covered in game play and fitness activities. My main goal is to make sure I will be able to run a safe PE class when we go back in the fall. It will definitely look different, but if you put the effort in you’re students will still get a great physical education.
